What is a car data check?
A car data check can be performed on any UK vehicle that you are considering purchasing.
A car data check gives you some protection and piece of mind regarding the vehicle you are buying. Checks are performed by using data recorded with the DVLA and can confirm a number of details about the vehicle.
A car data check can tell you:
- If the vehicle has been reported as stolen.
- If there is any unpaid finance on the car.
- If the car has ever been declared as been written off.
- Whether the vehicle is an import.
- Whether the registration matches the chassis number.
- If the log book details match the details of the car.
You can perform a car data check whether you are buying from a new or used car dealer or from a private seller. To perform a car data check you will need to know the vehicle registration and the VIN or chassis number.

Why get a car data check?
If you do not obtain a car data check you may find yourself at risk of having the car taken away if it has been stolen or the finance has not been paid by the previous owner. If the vehicle was previously a write off it could be unsafe to drive and be particularly dangerous in the event of an accident.
